Roses are red, V day is green.
Valentine’s Day this year is fast approaching and with so many of the traditional celebrations made unavailable to us, we have an opportunity to create brand new ones. Is your resolution this year to be a little more sensitive to our planet? Why not shower your loved ones with TLC without the CO².

The perfect virtual #homedate

In separate social bubbles from your partner? Don’t fret, you can still plan the perfect video call date, with a little creativity. Change your video background to the most romantic setting you can think of, such as the Eiffel Tower, a Swiss chalet, Venetian canals, or somewhere sentimental like your favourite restaurant – whisk yourselves away and set the scene. Cook, dress up, sit at the table, light candles  and then enjoy your favourite meal together. All it takes is a little imagination (and a good internet connection).

Flower power

If you are lucky enough to live with that special someone and they’re hinting at a big bouquet, consider ordering one with recyclable wrapping. Also, did you know that you can chop up flowers when they are past their best and add to compost? For a more long-term sustainable option, consider gifting a potted plant instead. Succulents are cheap, incredibly low maintenance, survive the whole winter and come in a range of beautiful shapes, sizes and colours.

Hearts and crafts

Use household items and get creative with the kids to show Cupid what you’re made of! Use old newspapers, magazines and packaging from those January sale orders to make an upcycled card. It doesn’t matter if you’re not crafty, all that matters is that it is made with love. If you are an editing wizard, why not create an enchanting e-card they can save to their device and look at whenever they want?

Sweet like chocolate

Chocolate is a key ingredient to happiness.  To keep the Earth happy, avoid plastic wrapped chocolates and buy organic, Fair-trade ones if you can. If you prefer an edible gift that’s more personal, drizzle fresh berries with chocolate or channel your inner baker by making brownies, cupcakes or rocky road.

The ultimate gift

For that perfect green gift, consider local, sustainable vendors. There are plenty of small, online businesses for vintage or recycled clothes and jewellery. There are even companies that will upcycle clean old t-shirts or scarves and make them into personal quilts or pillowcases. Alternatively, go old school and make your partner a romantic ‘mixtape’ playlist. If you’re a fan of gifting experiences, book a virtual cooking class, wine and cheese tasting or mixology session. You can also try couple’s yoga or salsa dancing – all from the comfort of your living room.

These are just a handful of ways we can all do our part, by staying safe, sustainable and showing others just how much we care.
