Getting fit can feel like a daunting journey. Gym memberships, diet plans and sports clothing can all add up financially and can be a barrier to achieving the long-term benefits that healthy living can bring. However, there are a number of ways you can cut the costs as you cut the pounds, and get fit for free this summer.

1. Work with what you have

Gym memberships are expensive, and when you are getting started on your fitness journey, they can be daunting places. Instead, work with what you have. There are loads of effective workouts you can do using items you already have in your home. Sprinting up the stairs, using your table or countertop to do incline push ups, or lunging for the three minutes you spend brushing your teeth in the morning and evening are great ways to introduce exercise gradually and kickstart your fitness journey.

2. Look for inspiration

The internet gives us access to a wealth of information at the tap of a button. You can find hundreds of healthy recipes, workouts, jogging routes, or even other people to get fit with. If you live in London, Bristol, or Edinburgh, Project Awesome is a free workout group that meets up before work for spontaneous exercise sessions. There is no booking required and everyone is welcome regardless of their fitness level.

3. Make small changes for big results

When it comes to getting fit, even small changes can have a massive impact. Incorporating walking into your daily routine will provide a range of health benefits and save you money. Getting off the bus a few stops early or substituting transport entirely for your morning commute will get you to work feeling energised and ready for the day.

4. Plan for success

Food is the single most important part of your fitness journey. Reducing calories is important, but the range and contradictory nature of available advice can be overwhelming. The best thing you can do is consider what you are eating, and prepare your meals in advance. Planning your meals and doing a weekly shop also will save you money, as it reduces wastage.

5. It pays to lose

While you are getting into the best shape of your life, why not reap the financial rewards? Health insurance companies will often offer cheaper policies as your health risks reduce – and some, like Vitality, offer benefits like free cinema tickets for walking a certain number of steps a day. If you have health insurance, give your provider a call. It is in both of your interests to incentivise a healthier lifestyle.
