Your one week Christmas countdown: fun activities for all the family to ensure Christmas goes off with a bang

The tree is up, the presents are all (hopefully) bought and wrapped, the turkey is ordered and there’s less than a week’s worth of chocolate left in the advent calendar.

So, with the countdown on, here are five Christmas activities for the whole family to enjoy in the run up to the most magical day of the year.

  1. Local Carol service
No matter how good or bad your singing voice is, everyone loves a good singalong and there’s no better way to feel Christmassy than singing ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing’ or ‘O Come O Ye Faithful’ with your loved ones. Most local churches or town halls run carol services for free and just ask for a small donation to their chosen charity – and you get to sing and support your local area – win, win!

  2. Christmas baking

Gingerbread houses, chocolate truffles and mince pies are synonymous with Christmas. Children of all ages can get involved in the kitchen, so as long you don’t mind a bit of flour around the kitchen and won’t freak out if an egg gets dropped on the floor. Everyone will love your creations and they will feel extra magical as you have made them yourself. Remember to leave some for Santa though...

  3. Christmas lights tour
Inflatable Santa, light up reindeers and giant candy canes! Drive around any town long enough and you’ll find a street going above and beyond with their Christmas lights. Get the family in the car, blast out the Christmas music and drive around your local town to find the best (or worst) ones in your area.

  4. Christmas movie marathon
Everyone has a favourite Christmas movie, and whether it is Home Alone, The Grinch or Elf, a movie marathon is a must. So, grab your Christmas treats, make some hot chocolate and snuggle up on the sofa to indulge in a guilt-free movie marathon with your loved ones.

  5. ‘Snow’ ball fights
We all dream of a white Christmas, however, considering the last official one in the UK was in 2010, the odds are pretty slim. But there are plenty of ways to recreate the fun of a snowball fight without it actually snowing. You can buy artificial snow online or from most department stores or alternatively, save money and just use cotton wool.

Merry Christmas everyone, from all of us at RCI Bank!
