Can you believe we’re already over halfway through the year? January often starts with good intentions. Many of us may set savings goals, create budgets or tell ourselves we’d like to be more mindful with money. But as the months pass, life happens. Unexpected expenses may crop up, priorities might change and financial goals may sometimes take a back seat.

That’s why the middle of the year may be a useful time to pause and check in with your finances. Rather than waiting until December to review how things are going, taking stock now might help you see what’s worked well, consider any small adjustments and feel more aware of where you stand.

Review your goals

You may want to start by looking back at any financial goals you set at the beginning of the year. Perhaps you wanted to build an emergency fund, save for a holiday, make home improvements or simply add to your savings over time.

A mid-year review can be a helpful opportunity to see how far you’ve come and whether your goals still reflect your current priorities. Life can change throughout the year, and it’s perfectly normal for financial plans to change too.

If you’ve made progress, it’s worth taking a moment to recognise it. If things haven’t gone quite as planned, try not to be discouraged. There may still be opportunities to make small, positive changes during the second half of the year.

Check your spending

A mid-year review can also be a good time to look at where your money is going.

You could review your recent bank statements and spending habits to see whether anything stands out. For example, you might notice subscriptions you no longer use, areas where costs have increased or places where you may be able to reduce spending.

Small changes may add up over time. Even setting aside a little extra each month, where affordable, could help you move closer to your goals by the end of the year.

Refresh your savings plan

If you’ve fallen behind on your savings goals, try not to be disheartened. There is still time to review your approach and consider what feels realistic for you.

You may want to think about whether you could:

• Increase your monthly savings contribution, if affordable
• Set up or review a standing order
• Put aside unexpected income, such as bonuses or gifts
• Create smaller milestone targets to help keep yourself motivated

Breaking a larger goal into smaller steps can make it feel more manageable.

Focus on progress, not perfection

When reviewing your finances, it can be easy to focus on what hasn’t gone to plan.

Instead, you may find it helpful to recognise the progress you have made. Whether you’ve built your savings, reduced some debt or simply become more aware of your finances, every positive step can count.

A mid-year money check-in doesn’t need to be about being perfect. It can be a way to understand where you are today and think about where you’d like to be in the months ahead. With six months still to go, there may still be time to take small, manageable steps towards your financial goals before the year is out.
